Several flights are being conducted over the Canary Islands and Castile and León to develop an innovative enabling solution for continuous, automated monitoring of forest areas using sensors embedded in aeronautical and/or aerospace platforms to capture data for subsequent processing with data analytics tools.
Pilot Projects
Projects in Castile and León
Three forest areas are selected in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León:
Zone 1: El Amogable
SORIA
This area was selected both for its proximity to infrastructure suitable for unmanned aircraft, as well as for its high percentage of Public Utility Forests (82.24%), which makes it an ideal environment for forest monitoring. The purpose of the flight in this zone of pine forests is to develop innovative solutions for continuous forest inventory, precision forestry, and fire prevention.
Zone 2: El Maíllo
Salamanca
In the province of Salamanca, with El Maíllo airfield as the takeoff point at an altitude of 1027 meters. The flights in this area aim to assess the state of forests and reforestation areas after fires, contributing to sustainable forest management and early warning of environmental risks.
Zone 3: Valcabadillo
Palencia
Located north of the Valcabadillo forest center, in the province of Palencia, this area was selected for its favorable topography (slope less than 150 meters) and high concentration of Public Utility Forests (208.61 km²). The predominant formations include reforested pine forests of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra, as well as oak forests. The purpose of the flight in this area is to implement continuous and automated monitoring technologies for tracking forest masses, facilitating decision-making in precision forestry.
