XR SIMULATOR

FOR WILDFIRE TRAINING

ITCL TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Regional Government of Castile and León – CDF

A mixed reality (XR) simulation system for training forestry professionals using georeferenced fires overlaid on the real environment

What is it and what is it used for?

This is a mixed reality (XR) simulation system designed to train forestry professionals in real-world settings. It recreates georeferenced wildfires overlaid on the real environment, allowing users to practice detection, tactical decision-making, and the application of safety protocols without physical risk.

  • MR-ForestWatch – Simulator for monitoring posts
  • SIMFIRE-MR – Multi-user simulator for fire dispatchers and fire suppression commanders

The problem it solves

Traditional wildfire training is costly, difficult to replicate, and does not allow for the creation of critical scenarios without putting trainees at risk. Decision-making requires ongoing, coordinated training, which this solution makes possible in a safe, repeatable, and measurable way.

“Safe and repeatable forest fire trainingin real-world settings, thanks to georeferenced, multi-user XR simulation.”

Javier MelúsSubproject Coordinator - ITCL

What makes it innovative?

Mixed Reality in Outdoor Settings

Georeferenced simulated fires superimposed on the actual landscape using digital elevation model (DEM) occlusion.

Centimeter-accurate RTK GPS

Sub-meter and centimeter-level positioning that ensures precise alignment of the virtual scene with the actual terrain.

Multi-user simulation

Multiple users share the same virtual environment in real time to practice coordinated tactical decisions on the ground.

Expected impact

This initiative is expected to improve technical training, enhance equipment safety, and strengthen coordination among commanders, which will contribute to a more effective response to wildfires and better protection of our natural heritage.
