Calculating the Perimeter of Wildfires Based on Hotspots

What is it and what is it used for?

Automatic generation of wildfire boundaries based on the most recent hotspots detected by the MODIS and VIIRS satellite instruments, with a constantly updated and reliable geographic delineation of active fires, which is essential both for firefighting operations and for feeding simulation models.

The problem it solves

Hotspot data is a valuable source of information, but it does not represent a perimeter; rather, it is a collection of individual detections. Furthermore, this raw data may contain “noise,” such as duplicates or false positives from industrial areas, which distort the reality of the fire; or it may create inconsistencies because it is impossible to discern whether a cluster of points represents a new fire or the progression of an existing one.

"Theautomatic conversion of hotspots into reliable perimeters makes it possible to determine the actual extent of a wildfire in near real time."

What makes it innovative?

Data Flow

A data flow is implemented to process the most recent hotspot data in order to filter out duplicates and exclude points located in industrial zones identified on national maps.

Clustering Algorithm

An algorithm is applied to group the filtered points, identifying separate fires based on the density and proximity of the points

Expected impact

To provide firefighting operations with automatable and rapidly acquired information on the extent and shape of active fire fronts without the need for on-site measurements, for both decision-making and the execution of simulations.
