Smart Forest Monitoring System

What is it and what is it used for?

The Continuous Forest Inventory of Castile and León (IFC-CyL) is a digital platform that integrates satellite imagery, LiDAR data, and field information to provide a constantly updated view of the region’s forests. It enables users to track the evolution of forest stands, estimate timber and carbon stocks, detect changes such as fires or logging, and generate alerts that facilitate more efficient, data-driven forest management.

The problem it solves

The available forest data is often several years out of date compared to the actual conditions on the ground, making planning and decision-making difficult. The IFC-CyL addresses this limitation through a system capable of continuously updating information on forest resources and automatically detecting significant changes in the area.

“To transformthe forests of Castile and León into a region monitored in real time in order to better manage their resources and anticipate changes.”

What makes it innovative?

Smart Inventory

It combines artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, LiDAR data, and forest growth models to generate an accurate and up-to-date representation of the condition of the forests.

Continuous monitoring

It detects changes in forest cover, generates alerts, and automatically updates the information, eliminating the need for periodic inventory surveys and providing a dynamic view of how the landscape is changing.

Expected impact

It will help improve sustainable forest management, optimize forest planning, and strengthen the ability to respond to fires, logging, or degradation processes. In addition, it will facilitate the estimation of forest stocks and carbon, providing strategic information for climate change adaptation and the forest bioeconomy.
