The technology developed by ITCL in collaboration with the Regional Government of Castile and León will make it possible to simulate forest fires in real-world settings to train forest rangers and firefighting personnel.

The RetechFOR project focuses part of its work on developing an XR simulator that will be used to train experts in fighting wildfires. This innovative technological tool was created by ITCL Technology Center in collaboration with the Regional Government of Castile and León, through the Center for Fire Defense (CDF), with the aim of improving the preparedness and safety of professionals working in fire prevention and suppression.

The solution uses mixed reality (XR) to simulate wildfires in a real-world environment. Specifically, professionals will be able to train in the field and observe smoke plumes or simulated fire scenarios in order to practice early detection, tactical decision-making, and the application of safety protocols.

The system comprises two main applications. First, MR-ForestWatch, which forest rangers can use to conduct training exercises from their own observation posts by identifying and classifying simulated smoke plumes. Second, the SIMFIRE-MR application will be particularly useful for resource managers and fire suppression commanders, who will be able to train together in fire scenarios to evaluate decisions in real time.

SAFETY TRAINING FOR FOREST FIRES

This type of technology addresses one of the main challenges in wildfire training, as traditional drills are often costly, difficult to replicate, and do not always allow for the safe recreation of critical situations. As a result, the simulator will enable the creation of realistic, safe, and repeatable scenarios, facilitating continuous and measurable training.

One of the most innovative features of this solution is the integration of precise georeferencing, digital terrain models, and RTK GPS positioning, which allow simulated fires to be overlaid onto the real landscape and enable multiple users to coordinate their actions within the same virtual scene.

This initiative is expected to improve technical training, enhance equipment safety, and strengthen coordination among commanders, which will contribute to a more effective response to wildfires and better protection of our natural heritage.
